The Backpack Program

The Backpack Program at the Bowdoinham Community School is a critical part of our work. Almost 50% of students at the elementary school qualify for free or reduced lunch. Every week, Food Pantry volunteers fill backpacks for students with healthy meals and snacks to ensure that kids in need receive adequate sustenance over the weekends. Each backpack includes 7 meals and 4 snacks, and is planned so that a six-year old could prepare most meals themselves. The cost of filling one backpack is about $15 ($1. 30 every time a child eats).
$60 will fill one child’s backpack each week for an entire month.
